David Krumholz as Isidor Rabi in 'Oppenheimer'

300 Years of Physics

This was one of my favorite moments in ‘Oppenheimer’

In this scene, the physicist Isidor Rabi (portrayed by David Krumholz) tells Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) why he will not be coming to Los Alamos to work on the Manhattan Project.

“When you drop a bomb,” Rabi says, “It falls on the just and the unjust.  I don’t want the culmination of 300 years of physics to be a weapon of mass destruction.”

Every time I hear that line, I think “No.  The culmination of 300 years of physics is not a weapon of mass destruction. It’s controlled fusion.”

But, humans being humans, we have to figure out ways to blow things up first.
